Palliative Care vs. Hospice Care: What Is the Difference?

The terms "palliative care" and "hospice care" are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. Understanding the difference can help families make more informed decisions about the kind of support that is right for their child.

Palliative Care: Comfort at Any Stage

Palliative care is specialized medical care focused on reducing pain, managing symptoms, and improving quality of life. The important thing to know is that palliative care can begin at any point after a serious diagnosis, even while a child is still receiving curative treatments.

A child undergoing chemotherapy, for example, might also receive palliative care to manage pain, nausea, or anxiety. Palliative care is not about prognosis. It is about comfort.

Services often include pain and symptom management, emotional and psychological support for the child and family, coordination between medical teams, and help navigating complex treatment decisions.

Hospice Care: Comfort at End of Life

Hospice care is a specific type of palliative care that begins when curative treatment is no longer the goal. It is typically recommended when a child has a life expectancy of six months or less, though this can vary.

Hospice shifts the focus entirely to comfort, dignity, and quality time. Medical care continues, but it is directed at keeping the child pain-free and at peace rather than treating the underlying condition.

Hospice care also wraps around the whole family, offering grief counseling, spiritual support, respite for caregivers, and help with practical needs.

They Work Together

Palliative care and hospice care are not either/or. Many families begin with palliative care early in a diagnosis and transition to hospice care as their child's condition progresses. The shift can be gradual, and a good care team will help families navigate the timeline at their own pace.
